A 1980s-set story centered around a man vs. machine chess tournament

Computer Chess is a 2013 independent film about a computer v/s computer chess tournament in 1980. This sci-fi movie made in black and white on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is written and directed by Andrew Bujalski. The film was first premiered within the 2013 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. At Sundance it won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, and subsequently screened within such festivals as South by Southwest and Maryland Film Festival.

It has begun its theatrical run on July 17th, after it has screened at prestigious film festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and Berlin. The reviews have been very positive. Entire movie was shot on black and white Sony AVC-3260 video cameras from 1968. These cameras uses tubes to convert images to electronic signals.

Director of the movie and technicians made some modifications to the camera to make it fit to work with the digital tools of video editing. These cameras recorded on three-quarter-inch tape, but decks that play those tapes are no more available in the market, so both the decks and the tape for recording would have been impractical.
