The new diesel locomotive factory in Bihar

Indian Railways has decided to start a new joint venture company with a private sector player to start a new locomotive factory near Marhowra in Bihar in near future. Indian Railways plans to buy at least one-third of its requirement of diesel locomotives from this new joint venture unit. This new joint venture unit controlled by a private sector firm will produce only diesel locomotives and other spares related to diesel locomotive technology and needs of Indian Railways.

The RFQ guarantees that the railways will buy atleast 100 locomotives a year for the next seven to 10 years from the Marhowra facility. It also expects to acquire another 250 diesel locomotives a year from the state-owned Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi and other locomotive works and IR factories all across India.

New ATMs in Indian Railways

Indian railways is planning to get ATM's on some of its Selected trains, after already having ATM's Installed in most of the stations The latest expansion that the Indian railways ministry is considering to have ATM's on selected trains.
For now the various parameters are being considered by the railways for feasibility of this project to be undertaken.
The fist phase of this ATM project involve setting up ATM's in Popular trains then if the suggested model seem profitable then a second phase project undertaken would include all other trains .
Recently automatic ticket vending machines are also being planned to be installed on most of the major stations in India. The automatic vending machines will platform and unreserved tickets, definitely reducing the rush on ticket counter.

Indian Railways to offer Concessions to HIV/AIDS Patients

In a new initiative Indian Railways is considering offering fare concessions to people living with HIV/AIDS in the country to facilitate their travel to the National AIDS Control Organisation's antiretroviral treatment centers, which offer subsidized treatment at 127 locations says the Indian Express report.
According to the Express, Indian Railways is considering offering concessions as high as 75% to people living with the disease regardless of their purpose for traveling. Indian Railways already offers fare concessions ranging between 50% to 75% to people living with various medical conditions, including tuberculosis, leprosy, hearing and speech disorders, and heart and kidney disorders. The consideration to expand fare concessions is seen as one of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav's "big ticket" items for the Rail budget, which is scheduled to be released in February, the Express reports.
